Pulseaudio doesn't allow multiple applications to play sound

I followed the wiki page for Pulseaudio not once, but twice, and for some reason it still won't allow multiple applications to access the sound card. When I start up two applications which try to use sound, I get "ALSA lib pulse.c:272:(pulse_connect) PulseAudio: Unable to connect: Access denied". What could cause this? How do I fix it?

try restarting.
