Enabling KMS stops Fn brightness keys from being interpreted

(I'm using 2.6.31-rc2 from git)

When I turn on KMS for i915, Fn-Up/Down don't work. Like, at ALL.

If KMS is off, they work fine.

I can adjust the brightness just fine via the /proc or /sys interfaces both ways.

xev doesn't even acknowledge the keys being pressed.

Any ideas?

OSD for brightness pops up but it doesn't change the brightness level...

Same problem here on a Macbook 4,1. Had to disable KMS to get
brightness keys to work.

HI Barghest,

I have an NC10 too, and my workaround was to write two bash scripts that toggle up and down the brightness with setpci, using a hex converter (dc from the bc package).

The scripts are here:

Re: Enabling KMS stops Fn brightness keys from being interpreted

Thanks for this makimaki.

Sad that I've already switched back to "KMS off". With KMS xrandr --panning 1024x768 didn't work correctly. Scrolling up on the screen sometimes didn't bring back the whole screen, so that the upper taskbar wasn't visible.

I just tried out KMS because of this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/394490 and I wanted to see, if this is affected by KMS. I don't know: Should I file a bug report for Arch, too?

Adding acpi_backlight=vendor as a kernel parameter on boot solved the issue for me. There's also another topic about this problem floating around.
