MPD not found in local db

I ran pacman -Syy and then pacman -R mpd, and it said

'mpd not found, searching for group...
error: 'mpd': not found in local db'

I can reinstall it fine, with pacman -S mpd.  Why does that happen?

Can you do

pacman -Qi mpd

and see what you get?

-Qi will query packages installed.
-Ss will query packages in the repo

To the OP: Make sure you have the [extra] repo enabled in pacman.conf (although there is no reason why it should be disabled).
Otherwise, try a different mirror.
