very strange: no sound!

Yesterday from one moment to the other i had no sound anymore.
My audigy was configured with alsa and i had never problems with it.

I have no idea what could be the problem. If i look at the sound progs it seems like it works well but i hear nothing. and they dont give error-messeges...

Only the realplayer gives a message:

Cannot open the audio device. Another application may be using it.

What can I do? Where can I look for a solution for my problem? Which output could be interessting?
Please tell me what information you need to help me and sorry for my bad english.

Re: very strange: no sound!

try booting to another distro if u have, or use a live-cd, just to make sure your hardware still works ok, cause it sounds like an hardware problem more of a software one. but i can be wrong wink

Re: very strange: no sound!

hi,
just as a thought. What WM do you use? In case you use KDE try killing the arts daemon ( "killall artsd") and then just restart your sound program, like your music player. Don't worry about the artsd, it will be started automatically.
Now in case you don't use KDE, quite honestly I can't tell you what to do. maybe check "alsamixer" and see if there is no muted channel or something like that.

ArchLinux (x86_64) w/ kdemod

Re: very strange: no sound!

Thanks for your help. Unfortunatly it doesnt solved the problem.

It cant be a hardware problem because ive got windows on my machine too. There the sound works well...

I realy use kde but that also dont seem to be the problem because i tested it also with mp3blaster and mplayer without x and arts. There its the same like with kde.

sad

Re: very strange: no sound!

the error cannot open audio device implies that the permissions may be wrong - have you recently changed your devfs settings or switched to udev?

check the alsa setup in the wiki: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Alsa%20setup for more information.

As a quick check, do a "ls -l" and check your sound devices.  If they are owned by "root root" and/or have mod settings of 0660, then you need to follow the wiki.

No i doesnt.

the owner is root root but my settings in /etc/devfsd.conf are ok and the sound also doesnt work if im root..  :?
the alsa setup seems ok.

Re: very strange: no sound!

ok, then let's diagnose:
i need you to post (a) your rc.conf, (b) you lspci output, (c) the output of tail -n 30 /var/log/everything.log, and (d) and sound related lines in dmesg

i'm going to need more information on this error....

also, find your sound device (i don't know anymore... is it /dev/snd/dsp, /dev/dsp, what?) can cat /dev/urandom > $SND_DEV... it's fun

Re: very strange: no sound!

you havn't loaded "snd-pcm-oss" module,
I think realplayer uses oss

arch + gentoo + initng + python = enlisy

Re: very strange: no sound!

yeah xerxes got it first:
in the MODULES array in rc.conf add snd-pcm-oss (this enables oss emulation which some programs still need)

also, if that doesn't help, remove hotplug from the MODULES array (does this even work??) - hotplug sometimes loads the wrong modules.... mine loads the intel "m" module instead of the normal one and totally borks my sound

Re: very strange: no sound!

you had right. With the snd-pcm-oss modul real player dont give the errormessage anymore.

I tought hotplug could realy be the problem because i added it just a few days ago. Unfortunatly it doesnt change anything if i remove it.

Are there probably settings of hotplug that i have to set back too?

no idea...

Re: very strange: no sound!

naw, personally i dont use the hotplug daemon - it loads too many useless modules.... hotplug itself is used by udev, but the daemon isnt needed
