I thought I knew a thing or 2 about computers but this has me confused.
I have an older system from 1999 but Im not sure which version of arch linux to download

if it supports 64bit than try x86_64.
you can find more information here:

sorry for my bad english

you need archlinux-2009.02-core-i686.iso

Try 32 bit, as both 32 and 64 bit processors can handle it, and seeing as the computer is from '99, it shouldn't have enough ram to make 64 bit worth it anyways.
I need to find a way out so everyone can find their way out.

+1 for this statement. x64 is really when you need >4 gigs of memory. What are your hardware specs by the way?

Slenkar: 32 bit absolutely:
There aren't all the program for 64 first of all, and when i've developed for a 32 bit target processor, on 64 bit host, there were so much confusing crash.
Yeah, 64 is maybe quciker, but it's not so important me, like stability, compatilibity, and in this case you haven't got so much choosing

Stability is in my experience just as good on 64bit. The only real deciding factor in this case, is the fact that his hardware does not support 64bit, so he can't use it even if he want to.

600MHz sounds like PIII, and it is i686. You can cat /proc/cpuinfo to be sure. (or just open the case and have a look)
