Trying to get xfce4

Hi I took the plunge and installed arch linux,

Im trying to install xfce4 now.

I reset my modem and used USB and ETHERNET (on seperate occasions of course) but it says that it cant find xfce in the db

I used this command: pacman -S xfce4

(i used the CD core edition - not the FTP edition)

Re: Trying to get xfce4

Do you actually have a connection to the internet?

Try pacman -Sy to update package list.

Maybe try another mirror.

Re: Trying to get xfce4

I did pacman -Sy and it said it couldnt read from any of the mirrors.

Maybe I have to edit the conf file, what command should I use?

Re: Trying to get xfce4

If it's only a modem you have, and not a router, then you might have to use pppoe. Take a look at the 'pppd' page on the wiki.

Re: Trying to get xfce4

yes I am just using a cable modem

when I open a text file with vi how do I save it and exit the program?

I just looked at the wiki page for pppd and it seems rather complicated, maybe another distro of linux is for me?

Re: Trying to get xfce4

If you find pppd to be beyond your grasp, then yes, maybe arch isn't for you. Since pppd is rather easy to set up. It all comes down to your will to read and learn.

If you want to put the effort into learning tho, the rewards will probably be worth it.

Re: Trying to get xfce4

Have you tried pinging google to see if your connection is working, incase it's just a mirror issue?

ping -c 3 www.google.com

Nano would probably be far easier an editor to use to edit any files at this stage. The bindings are at the bottom of the screen to make cut/paste and saving a doddle.
If you're adamant on using vi, after making changes hit ESC, then type :wq to save and quit.
Once you've editted /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist you'll need to type pacman -Syy.

Re: Trying to get xfce4

Every time I want to try something out I have to switch towers (mouse keyboard monitor) and make sure no-one else wants to use the windows computer. Also, no cut and paste because I cant get online to copy the instructions, that is why I thought about using another distro that is easier to get online.'

I will try pinging google tomorrow.

Meanwhile, when arch starts up it says

IP Config: no device to configure - is this the cause of the problems?

Re: Trying to get xfce4

Sounds like you should get a router with a built in switch and a extra set if keyboard/display/mouse tongue

Re: Trying to get xfce4

You probably don't need drivers since it's connected using ethernet. Just configure pppd as described here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PPP … _with_pppd
