laptop brightness buttons not working

Hi,

I've a new dell studio 1555. and most of it is working fine, only the brightness buttons are causing problems, they don't react.
I've tried a lot of things:
*) acpid is running
*) the keys send an event, but is seems nothing is responding to it
*) gnome brightness applet says it can't control the screen
*) the "video" and "lcd" modules are loaded

[tom@laptop-tom ~]$ cat /proc/acpi/video/M86/LCD/brightness
<not supported>

I'm out of ideas, am I missing something?

Thanks

Re: laptop brightness buttons not working

What's in your syslog, some related stuff ? And in xorg log ? Which kernel do you use? Did it work earlier ? Is it work on graphical livecd (ubuntu, sushe)?

Did that fix your problem mouse256?

I'm having the same issue with my dv6618 and adding the above to my menu.lst does not fix it.

Add noapic to the kernel line in grub.
Fixed it for me.

Re: laptop brightness buttons not working

Sorry about the late reply. It seems my email address I used here was expired and I did not get notifications...

It's a new laptop, so I haven't tried it otherwise.
Now it seems they are working most of the time (but sometimes they don't), and I'm not sure what I changed. I'll try to add the acpi_brightness option to see if it work then all the time.

Nevertheless, it's not fully working: eg the gnome-brightness-applet cannot get the status, neither can it change it. This is also the same behavior as with an ubuntu livecd.
