Firefox Bookmarks Dont Show on Startup

when i open firefox, i have the bookmarks set to show as icons in the top right (see screenshot attached.) however, when i open a new firefox window, it only shows the arrows (bottom of screenshot.) when i click customize, the icons become visible and show as i would like them.
is there a way that i could get the icons to show initially?

If you run from console, do you see any action output when you do it manually ? Maybe you can get some information with it, maybe not.

i get this when firefox is loading:

(firefox:9778): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: IA__g_object_weak_unref: couldn't find weak ref 0xb647aec0(0xb2c4ac60)

but nothing when i click customize.
