I'm having a huge issue installing propietry catalyst drivers for my ATI HD4870.
I'm using the following drivers from AUR - http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=22899
Here is my Xorg.0.log - http://pastebin.com/f74119635
I can a dependecy problem with libgl, I tried doing pacman -Rd libgl, catalyst and catalyst-utils get installed but do not work. I'm using an up to date kernel Linux arch 2.6.30-ARCH #1
Any ideas? Can I downgrade I really need 3D support, currenly using radeonhd works well but no gaming Thanks for any advice.

seems that you didn't configured your xorg.conf to use catalyst driver. i see from your log that is tryinh to use radeonhd which is the opensource driver. you have to change into Device section, driver "fglrx"
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

I might be posting the wrong log but perhaps I have made some serious mistake, trying again.

My bad I posted the wrong log. After running aticonfig --initial on a newly and empty created /etc/X11/xorg.conf I can start X with fglrx. However anytime I start an opengl app or run glxgears I get a hard freeze / lock and need to restart computer. Any ideas?

Same problem here.
I believe it's an issue with 2.6.30 SMP kernels, downgrading to 2.6.28 should fix it.
There's a bug report over at the debian tracker here (that shows the relevant kernel crash lines, which may be helpful to solving the problem:

How would I downgrade? I don't see 2.6.28 in AUR?
