"SOLVED" Base install network problem on xps 1530

Hi guys got up to the install and config part but am stuck at getting the network running before updating on the base system.

I have a dsl modem that is connected to a linktip router and a static ip network. Had problems with Ubuntu but seemed ok with fedora. Its kind of flaky and eth0 is not configed right. I also think I need dhclient.

Going  to try a reinstall and play with config but is there something missing in auto configing a network , years ago it just worked out of the box.

Re: "SOLVED" Base install network problem on xps 1530

K so far did some looking in the rc.conf and shows eth0 info that was wrong so tried correcting the ip's etc. Also read for a router to set name server to router ip.

Still got nothing no ping etc and errors.

I have been using Ubuntu and fedora since 2004 but never had to bother with this so this is new to me. Any help would be appreciated as I really want to get Arch up and stable. My net connections have been flakey with Ubuntu with updates and changes so not sure how to fix this with config files.

Re: "SOLVED" Base install network problem on xps 1530

Weird , with the live memory stick there is no network connection by default. Trying to ping my router ip it tries but the pings show as another ip not in my router ip range and show up as uncorrectable and errors.

Think this a configuration error that I have to play with.

So need to set up eth0 , name server and any other config files to get things working. From experience had problems with getting DNS.

HELP.

Re: "SOLVED" Base install network problem on xps 1530

K Set name server in resolv.conf to my router ip and played with the other files. I can ping my router now but still show www.google.com as unknown or what ever it was. So still not connecting to dns properly. Outgoing info looks suspicious to me.

Any help. Ping

K so can ping the router but do not seem to be able to connect past there so thinking this is a problem with DHCS witch I seemed to have before with other distros.

Re: "SOLVED" Base install network problem on xps 1530

k have a question?

What does /etc/hosts have to do with this and is there an option to get info from the router.

Also would appreciate any good reads on this be it wiki or anything else to explain this. Been using linux for years but this manual thing is kind of new to me.

Dam , good , Arch is making me learn again smile

Have you tried using OpenDNS in /etc/resolv.conf ?

You might want to post the following in here to help us see what is wrong:

/etc/rc.conf
/etc/resolv.conf
/etc/hosts

Re: "SOLVED" Base install network problem on xps 1530

Problem is resolved.

I have a link-tip router and the DHCP Default Gateway: was not set.

I set the gateway and temp fixed it with "route add default gw <ip to gateway>

Pernament fixed it by setting gateway in /etc/rc.conf and un! rout.

Works ok now. System updated , now for X

Thanks for the help.

Arch looks sweet so far ubber fast boot lol.:)
