[SOLVED] - ridiculously high core temp in lm_sensors

Hi,

I recently fried my mobo and just got a new replacement one. As a precaution I thought I'd install lm_sensors and check the temperatures. Here the output:

toad@deskarch 709\3 ~ > sensors
coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0:      +63.0°C  (high = +78.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0001
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 1:      +63.0°C  (high = +78.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

w83627dhg-isa-0290
Adapter: ISA adapter
Vcore:       +1.22 V  (min =  +0.00 V, max =  +1.74 V)
in1:         +1.88 V  (min =  +0.41 V, max =  +0.03 V)   ALARM
AVCC:        +3.30 V  (min =  +2.98 V, max =  +3.63 V)
VCC:         +3.30 V  (min =  +2.98 V, max =  +3.63 V)
in4:         +1.10 V  (min =  +0.05 V, max =  +0.29 V)   ALARM
in5:         +1.67 V  (min =  +1.03 V, max =  +0.58 V)   ALARM
in6:         +1.67 V  (min =  +0.42 V, max =  +0.58 V)   ALARM
3VSB:        +3.30 V  (min =  +2.98 V, max =  +3.63 V)
Vbat:        +3.15 V  (min =  +2.70 V, max =  +3.30 V)
fan1:          0 RPM  (min =    0 RPM, div = 128)  ALARM
fan2:       1607 RPM  (min = 2518 RPM, div = 8)  ALARM
fan3:          0 RPM  (min = 10546 RPM, div = 128)  ALARM
fan5:          0 RPM  (min = 10546 RPM, div = 128)  ALARM
temp1:       +38.0°C  (high = +34.0°C, hyst = +90.0°C)  sensor = thermistor
temp2:       +53.5°C  (high = +80.0°C, hyst = +75.0°C)  sensor = thermistor
temp3:        +6.0°C  (high = +19.0°C, hyst = +19.0°C)  sensor = thermistor
cpu0_vid:   +2.050 V

I'm really worried about the two core temps - sometimes they go up to 100°C. I was under the impression that temp1 and temp2 refer to the CPU...

Am slightly confused, a bit rushed and the wiki nor the forum give any more details on which refers to what.

Any hints, suggestions, ideas are most welcome!

Ta

What kind of CPU are we talking?

Also, know that termal sensors are not necessarily reliable or accurate...especially if the board has been repeatedly stressed.

Re: [SOLVED] - ridiculously high core temp in lm_sensors

Sorry, too little info in OP...

top is cool, no hoggers, just normal processes, CPU running at 4% or so.

Mobo

CPU

After having had lm_sensors tell me I could boil some tea on it I checked in the bios - which tells me that the CPU is running at indeed that temperature. Perhaps I should get some proper heat thingamijig paste and watch a few youtube videos... Will report back once that is done.

Yea, put some Arctic Silver 5 in place of whatever the stock garbage is.

My hunch says you may have a bum thermal sensor--it can happen.

Re: [SOLVED] - ridiculously high core temp in lm_sensors

Ah, that is better. I watched a couple of youtubes (they all said something different), got myself some thermal paste, took the computer apart, cleaned it, applied the new stuff with a credit card and spread it thinly on the CPU. BTW, the bloke who sold me the thermal paste said never to clean the CPU with rubbing alcohol in case it corrodes - so I just wiped it off completely and gave it another good rub afterwards.

Anyway, the machine is firing on all cylinders again and hovers around 43 °C when I really give it some smile
