2.6.31-rc2 [SOLVED]

can someone tell me how to upgrade to 2.6.31-rc2...?

want to see if my video performance (intel) improves. I can't find it in AUR and neither in test repo's.

greetings from Norway,
GJ Schouten

Re: 2.6.31-rc2 [SOLVED]

Hello Gjschouten!

From http://kernel.org
The latest stable version of the Linux kernel is:      2.6.30.3

Why would it be anywhere in arch, if the application isn't stable yet.

But maybe you can solve this with reading these wiki pages:

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ker … rom_Source
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ker … n_with_ABS

Or just download the kernel26 PKGBUILD, and modify the version , and that ones which are neccesary.

Hope this helps.

Use the Zen kernel (kernel26zen-git in AUR).  They always use the latest version or RC of the kernel.

Re: 2.6.31-rc2 [SOLVED]

yaourt -S kernel26-git ... edit pkgbuild and delete kernel26-firmware-git dependency.

I have an intel card (945gm) and my performance don't improve with 2.6.31.

Excuse my poor English.

This is good to cause more topic matter because of unstable kernel... I don't think so it's a good idea for a beginner to use an unstable kernel...

Re: 2.6.31-rc2 [SOLVED]

I am now downloading the zen-git kernel...

Thanks for your responds guys...
The reason I want to install this new unstable kernel and the newest intel driver from AUR is because I read in:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=75879&p=2

A lot of people with the same graphics card with much higher frame rates..With the kernel and video driver i use now i can't even barely move the mouse anymore when using compiz.

Cheers,
GJ

Maybe you need to look somewhere else? Xorg configuration maybe? You have to decide yourself if the amount of work you invest in this is worth the result... I've never seen a usability case for transparency and wobbly windows, but hey wink.

Re: 2.6.31-rc2 [SOLVED]

I've compiled 2.6.31-rc4 and it works great, my video performance got better. But I've got i915 and intel_agp built in kernel and not loaded as modules and kms is enabled from kernel configuration itself... I can guarantee it on 965GM with x3100, I don't know if performance jumps will occur with 945GM or even X4500HD...

Wobbly windows are just a more 'natural' feel, not very important. Transparency is very useful for me though, for a quick glance at the window below just alt-scrolldown, for comparing images to see how similar/unsimilar they are (just tile them on each other and change the transparency), for referring to instructions on a webpage while my terminal is full-screened (so I can see the error messages above the prompt), stuff like that.

To the OP, compiling a kernel has the potential to result in an unbootable system, so make sure not to overwrite your normal kernel, and to leave a line in GRUB booting up the stock kernel. Just in case.
