Lost ability to play audio cd <SOLVED>

I've recently lost ability to play audio cd's.  My drives recognize dvd's still however. Also this is happening across 3 drives on two computers (1 desktop and 1 laptop).  Somewhere something changed, but I'm not sure what.  Here is my dmesg

I was trying to rip a cd with abcde, which complains there is not cd in the drive.
I'm using gnome, when clicking on the audio cd in the menu it complains, unable to mount audio disc, cannot find drive /dev/sr0

/dev/sr0 exists however.

If anyone could give me an idea whats going on I'd appreciate it. Thanks

Re: Lost ability to play audio cd <SOLVED>

I've made some progress, this is a permissions issue somewhere.  Logging in as root gives me access.  What is the proper way to give myself access.  I assume I have somethign screwed up in hal somewhere? I struggle with getting hal configured properly, and reading my configuration.

Re: Lost ability to play audio cd <SOLVED>

Ok after trying a few things from the hal wiki page, I read that fstab should have the lines for optical drives removed.  I'm not sure how they got activated in the first place, but doing so fixed this for me.  I'll mark solved

Re: Lost ability to play audio cd <SOLVED>

I have the same problem but do not have any entries for optical drives in /etc/fstab that are activated (they are commented out).

Can't tell if this issue popped up recently since I only have the box set up last month and only now tried to read audio cds. My user is in the optical and audio group and Rhythmbox recognises the CD and the artist, title and tracks, but it doesn't play at all.

After inserting the disc:

# dmesg -c
sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=0x00 driverbyte=0x08
sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] Sense Key : 0x5 [current]
sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] ASC=0x64 ASCQ=0x0
end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 0
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 0
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 1
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 2
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 3
sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=0x00 driverbyte=0x08
sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] Sense Key : 0x5 [current]
sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] ASC=0x64 ASCQ=0x0
end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 0
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 0

Re: Lost ability to play audio cd <SOLVED>

I managed to solve the problem by adding myself to "optical" group:

sudo usermod -aG optical <myusername>

Re: Lost ability to play audio cd <SOLVED>

Bumping this with more info because it's the first hit on google when searching for arch linux mounting issues.
I couldnt access the DVD-rom nor any USB storage device.

I solved it by doing what the HAL wiki page says in " Mounting fails for normal users" under "Troubleshooting"

If you receive a Permission denied, "Unable to mount location", "Not authorized", or IsCallerPrivileged failed message when you try to mount a drive in Gnome, KDE or any other destop environment, you need to start your destop enviornment with ck-launch-session by changing your ~/.xinitrc. Look for the line that starts your DE. For eg

# exec gnome-session

and replace it with

# exec ck-launch-session gnome-session
