[SOLVED] Google gears in Shiretoko.

I have not been able to install google gears extension in firefox. Nor Shiretoko in extra (I believe...) neither firefox-branded from some AUR.

Having the useragent set to Firefox; with firefox-branded by default and with Shiretoko changing it in about:config. I go to gears.google home page and click install. It gives me the download window and downloads it but never installs it. It says

"Google Gears" could not be installed because it is not compatible with your Shiretoko build type (Linux_x86_64-gcc3). Please contact the author of this item about the problem.

I haven't been able to find any info regarding this on the Internet nor in these forums. Any help will be appreciated

Re: [SOLVED] Google gears in Shiretoko.

google doesn't have a 64 bit version of gears. that's the reason you cannot install the extension

Re: [SOLVED] Google gears in Shiretoko.

The Firfox JavaScript JIT is not available on x86_64 anyway.

Re: [SOLVED] Google gears in Shiretoko.

Wait but my PC has a Core 2 Duo processor, Why would I be using 64 bits software? Is there a way to change that? Is that always that way with Arch?

Thanks

Re: [SOLVED] Google gears in Shiretoko.

You installed the 64 bit version of arch. Your processor can run both 32 or 64 bit. Arch also has a 32 bit version, but you have to reinstall with it.

http://www.archlinux.org/download/
32 bit is i686
64 bit is x86_64

Re: [SOLVED] Google gears in Shiretoko.

Yes, that's what I was just reading... I don't remeber very well but I think that I did it by mistake... In despite of me not being able to tell the difference between i686 and x86_64, I think I may have chosen i686 because the other one tells me that it is for 64 bit processor.

Anyway, I've just read alse that arch is planning to drop i686 support and so, I think It would not be wise to install i686 anymore. At least not just for some firefox extension.

Is there a way to compile it for i686 being in a x86_64 system? or maybe, tell pacman to install the i686 version of firefox?

Thanks for your help.

Re: [SOLVED] Google gears in Shiretoko.

Well, I think I'll have to read all the ABS wiki page and see what I can get. I was thinking of downloading the i686 files from repo and use them as if they were from an AUR But I'm not sure if that'll do the trick.

Anyway, I'll mark this as solved and if someone wants to advice me with anything else, I'll gladly thank for the help.

The i686 drop was only an April's Fool joke.

About your problem, you could create a 32bit chroot for installing 32bit programs in a x86_64 environment.

Re: [SOLVED] Google gears in Shiretoko.

So, would you recommend me to install everything again with i686 ?

Im also having some odd (scratch) noise with alsa even when using aplay Front Center (I hear the words front center mixed with the noise)... And also, aircrack-ng yesterday was behaving oddly, When I tried to do a fakeauth atack while capturing packages with airmon-ng it stopped detecting even the beacons from the AP.

I'm just about a week from going back to school so, if I were going to start over again, It would have to be ASAP.

Someone has to put some legend to the dropping i686 support joke because it may confuse people like me...

Thanks for everything.

With all due respect, if you are confused by the joke you should not use arch.

Re: [SOLVED] Google gears in Shiretoko.

Ok, I finally reinstalled arch... I did a lot of reading and decided to do it because found that there are still many things that have no 64 bit support. One of them is google-gears. And I didn't want to have that restriction if at any moment I need certain software.

This time the installation was very smooth and fast, although I was not able to make a bootable USB (It always started printing GRUB GRUB GRUB... infinite times at boot and never moved on) I tried the dd and even the windows (ups) method but both gave me the same result.

Well, I wanted to put this here because now the issue is really solved
