X11 crashing after system update (nvidia)

Hi!

Today I updated my laptop, which wasn't updated for quite a while (c. 700-800 MB download, without big games). There was a minor kernel-update (2.6.30.1 to 2.6.30.4) and an update of the nvidia drivers (185.18.14 to 185.18.31). After a reboot, X didn't start any more. "startx" or kdm or whatever lead into a black screen, no nvidia-logo is shown and I can only work via ssh with the computer, local keyboard didn't work any more.

I have a GeForce Go 7400 in the laptop. On my desktop-pc (with an nvidia GefForce 9800) the problem didn't occure. I found out that going back to nvidia 185.18.14 solves the problem.

Okay, here some logs about the bug: When I am logged in via ssh and do a local startx on a local console, I get the following:

Ah, yes something I forgot. The xorg.conf is maybe not the nicest, but it's okay. Switching the driver from nvidia to vesa "solves" the problem, too. I already tried a completely new xorg.conf with "X -configure" but if this one uses "nvidia" as a driver, I get the crash.

Okay, if anybody has an idea what goes wrong there, that would be great!

Thanks in advance,

Thomas

Re: X11 crashing after system update (nvidia)

Lot's of people have reported similar problems on the forums and it happened to here too.  Downgrading to 185.18.14 fixed it for me.

Re: X11 crashing after system update (nvidia)

If nvidia-beta works for you, does that mean we can assume the 190.* series doesn't have this problem?

Should we push for an update to the beta as a result?

Re: X11 crashing after system update (nvidia)

Yes, please.

The list of ppl with the problem fills up in the bug report. I also have the problem with 185, not with 190

Re: X11 crashing after system update (nvidia)

hi,

exactly same problem with my vaio sz4 (nvidia 7400Go) after an upgrade kernel (2.6.30-2 to 2.6.30-4) and nvidia (185.18.14-1 to 185.18.31-1). Black screen on reboot.

Downgrande to 185.18.14-1 fix the issue.

Thanks.
