Unable to get the nvidia driver (proprietary) work

Hi,
I can't get the nvidia-driver work on my Lenovo Thinkpad T61 (Quadro NVS 140M).

At the moment I use the free NV-driver (with hal, no xorg.conf). I deinstalled the xfree86-video-nv package and libgl. Afterwards I installed 'nvidia' and created a minimal xorg.conf via nvidia-xconfigure. When I start the X-Server, the screen stays black, no nvidia-logo- nothing :-(

Dunno what goes wrong. Can someone help?

Thanks and Greetings!

Please excuse the possibly stupid question, but did you reboot after installing the driver? Only asking because I forgot to do that a while ago,

Which version of the driver are you using?  There have been a large number of post on the forums recently regarding errors with the latest version, including quite a few people complaining about blank screens.  Do a forum search.  Maybe try using an older version of the driver and see if that helps.

Re: Unable to get the nvidia driver (proprietary) work

I've got T61 as well, but with FX570.

Downgrading drivers solves it.

wget http://arm.kh.nu/extra::2009-7-30/os/x8 … pkg.tar.gz

change x86_64 to i686 if you have to.

Re: Unable to get the nvidia driver (proprietary) work

@loafer: I tried V185.18.29. I noticed that V185.18.31-1 is now available, so I will try it with this version. If it won't work, I'll downgrade as vi3dr0 recommended.
I'll let you know if I got news :-)

Thanks so far.

Yeah, V185.18.31-1 works, but is very unstable. My X-Server crashes irregulary :-(

Aargh, no- I let myself get fooled. Archlinux loaded the NV-driver instead of the nvidia. By creating a xorg.conf via nvidia-xconfig, the x-server crashes again. Same problem as before :-(

Re: Unable to get the nvidia driver (proprietary) work

I'm having the same issue as you all with the Nvidia 185.18.31-1 version of the driver on my T61p. Does version 185.18.29-1 work OK or should I stay at 185.18.14-1?

I really recommend nvidia-beta, I've been using it for months with no real issues. If your x-server keeps crashing, what do you have to lose?

My work sad

I can say that no version of the nvidia-driver works! I also tried to compile it by myself without success. It's very frustrating. I changed back to Sabayon on my T61 now and left Archlinux on my NC10 (There everything works perfectly!). The NV-driver is much too slow. Unfortunately...

Its a beta nvidia driver, the WORSE it can do is crash your x-server. Which is what you're experiencing anyway. So net effect on your work is probably 0.

Anyway, just consider it if you decide to try again. I know the feeling of just not having enough time to hack around when REAL work awaits.

Re: Unable to get the nvidia driver (proprietary) work

I have the same problem on my ThinkPad R61. And downgrading of nvidia (to 185.18.14) and kernel to last working version doesn't help - screen stays blank. I've managed to run X using 185.18.14 in single user mode once, but now it hangs up, too, and modprobing nvidia kernel module gives me wrong module format error.
