I also did change the mirror and loaded the packages anew

The firefox package itself doesn't really handle this stuff; Its more likely a xulrunner problem.

Just checked with heise.de. Everything displays normal on firefox 3.5.2-1 and xulrunner 1.9.1.2-1. Could it be a video driver problem? (I use nvidia 185.18.31-1.)
To know or not to know ...
... the questions remain forever.

Before blaming the drivers - do you use Compiz/KDE 4/xcompmanager or anything of that nature? I'm pretty sure that FF doesn't play well with KDE.

I have a board with built in AMD 780G(/X1300?) and use fglrx. I have a spare nvidia card lying around, I will put it in and try out tonight.
I use X without a xorg.conf file and don't use desktop effects as video playback doesn't work right with them for me

after installing the nvidia card it works
just a work-around and no solution but it will work for me
thanks to all that tried to help
