Try running "mplayerthumbsconfig" and setting the backend to mplayer.

I was trying a hack to make it work, until I read this, and I gotta say, your way is way way way easier than what I was trying to do. And makes me feel dumb for never looking if there was a way to configure the mplayerthumbs thing.
