Ati mobility X300 problem

I have a bit of a dilemma here, whether I should post this thread here or in the Laptop issues section.

I have recently updated my laptop. I use the fglrx driver, which works just fine. and I had to forced the kernel and few xorg packages not to upgrade. I can't remember which packages were upgraded, but now it makes a little black square on every redrawn object. I do experience similar problems on my desktop when upgrading kernel without rebuilding the nvidia driver. Simple solution here, but not for my laptop. Does anyone know what to do? Thank you

Hello sDoky!

1. "I have a bit of a dilemma here, whether I should post this thread here or in the Laptop issues section."
I think it's okay in both section too, because there are overlapping matters.

2. Is there any relevant information in your xorg.log/errorlog/syslog?

1. Thanks
2. I am afraid not, I have searched them and nothing. Although I get this

[minimal@sdoky-laptop ~]$ sudo gparted
Password:
Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
======================
libparted : 1.8.8
======================

every time I try to run some application. Not only as root, but also as normal user. I am talking about those xlib missing warnings, obviously. Could this be the "root of all evil"?

Another weird thing that is based on my observations, if the machine boots and I log in it does this weird thing with the litthe black square, on the other hand if I log out and back in it does not do that anymore.

Long shot: is grub using a framebuffer? If so, try plain text boot or if grub is already booting in plain text, try a vga mode.

Re: Ati mobility X300 problem

yeah, this does the trick, now that I have booted this way, I have seen many warnings, I shall deal with them tomorrow. Now I will go to sleep... It's been a long day since 3am
