Hi!
My gdm crashes randomly. It simply restarts and shows me the login dialog again.
I use Arch64, Xfce.

Welcome to the forum ladanz!
Which kernel/driver do you use ? Could it work with another display manager, like kdm, slim ?
Is there any relevant information in Xorg.log, messages.log ?
The update seems fine, but maybe I'm wrong.

Thank!
I use the 2.6.30.4-1 Kernel, nvidia drivers.
I think, it will take some time to test other dm, cause it crashes like only once a day.
I think there is nothing related in messages.log.

Did you try to reinstall? Is this problem on livecd/other distribution too? With these versions ?

Okay, reinstalled...
Now waiting for something to happen
I got the feeling, that i always hit a key or key-combination at the exact moment it crashes...

Also had the problem some days ago. Crashed once or twice a day with the same log entries. I used gdm with xfce. Now I switched to slim and the problems are gone.

I am having this same problem on x64 Archlinux. Seems to crash at random times.
Is there a soultion other than ditching gnome/gdm?
I am using the 2.6.30 kernel with nvidia drivers 185 (I believe)

A reinstall won't do anything because it doesnt seem like an Hardware problem or messed up install.

For all :
Check the bugtracker for problems with gdm , i could but a common problem if not, google it
Gotcha: it's also a problem with ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/346454
Seems like it's an Xorg issue ( i bet something with DRM )
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/342324
What is in /var/log/X11/Xorg.0.log
This might be a fix:
This is an issue with Xorg, specifically with the new option AccelMethod. Just remove or comment out the following line in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and the problem goes away:
Option "AccelMethod"

Maybe it works on computers that have 3d accelerated graphic cards, I don't.
I tried plotting a 3D graph on kalgebra with the options deactivated and it crashed instantly. Which suggests that the problem is related to that.
I'm going to try to activate UXA and EXA at the same time, maybe it works.
EDIT: I tried kalgebra again (after just logging in) and it didn't crash this time. I guess I was wrong, I'm still going to try what I said though.
2nd EDIT: I did some more experiments, it always crashes even with uxa and exa together when I try to make a 3D graph after a fresh restart.
Which means, it must have to do with 3D acceleration but I haven't found a configuration yet that works. If I find something I'll post it here.
But please try to find something too.

Did not solve anything, the accelmode make absolutely no difference! Although I still think it has to do with 3D acceleration (and UXA and EXA are 2D). But I'm not sure, just found that way to trigger the xserver restart.

This is my xorg.conf , maybe you should post yours' so we can see if there's anything wrong in common.

Is that a problem with Xorg or gdm?
Maybe the problem is solved if we install the lastest stable version of gdm...

I too run Intel Video. I use KMS and UXA and all that stuffs.
Sorry I just spotted in my Thread that I didn't state the error codes i was getting. But they are the same error.
