I want to install an mplayer that will handle vdpau.
I installed the standard mplayer version but that didn't have it.
Following some advice in another thread I rebuilt the standard mplayer with yaourt.
When I do 'mplayer -vo help' it shows a vdpau driver on the list. But when I do 'mplayer -vc help' there are no vdpau codecs listed.
I tried the same thing with mplayer-svn but get the same results.
I even tried compiling mplayer manually but get the same results.
What am I doing wrong?
TIA, gabu
(I have just moved to Archlinux64 after 3 years with Gentoo, so my Gentoo experience might be getting in the way)

If I'm to understand you, vdpau is listed in the video outputs, but there are no ffmpeg vdpau codecs? Cause those are the only codecs that specify vdpau for me...

I manually compiled using the svn source that I currently use on my Gentoo system and get the same odd results, whereas on Gentoo it compiles as you expect. This would seem to indicate that there is something about the Arch environment which is causing the problem rather than purely the source code.
I tried installing mplayer-vdpau-nogui but have the same problem there.

That is very odd, gabu. All I do to compile mplayer is retrieve the source from svn, then compile by:
CFLAGS='' ./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-gui --enable-linux-devfs --codecsdir=/home/xsx/Build/mplayer/all-20071007/
make && sudo make install
Nothing special, and I have no issues.

flamelab:
Thanks for the links. I had to get some of the dependencies from your site to be able to install.
However, when I then do a codec and output driver list they come out the same as I have been getting - vdpau in -vo and not in -vc.
Are you sure that they appear when you list them?
If they do appear for you, then why don't they appear for me, what is there about my setup that makes them apparently vanish?
Offline
i use mplayer from extra and after a recompile i get all the needed codecs.
[bexx@bexx-pc ~]$ mplayer -vc help | grep vdpau

The recompile of mplayer from extra using yaourt worked!
The big question is why didn't all the other recompiles and installs I tried not work.
I was beginning to wonder whether I might have had to revert back to Gentoo.But my experience of Arch so far has been really positive.
Incidentally my graphics card is an Asus EN8400GS Silent. I just use it to watch videos, not for anything particularly demanding.like games.

I got no idea, why i did not work before, but mplayer has some bugs in its config script. Therfore If you plan to watch movies with external subtitles (or simply use smplayer with vdpau) you need to rebuild mplayer as root.
Offline
I have found out why I was getting this problem. It is so obvious (and embarassing that I didn't pick it up earlier).
When you do the '-vc help' the output is not showing what mplayer has compiled into it but what it is capable of playing at that time.Because of entries I had copied over from my Gentoo system I had an old codec.conf file in the local user .mplayer directory that didn't have the vdpau entries in it and therefore overrode the global conf file - remove that local conf file and, voila, the vdpau entries appear in the list. This was why there could be a vdpau entry in the -vo list but no vdpau entries in the -vc list.
My apologies for taking up people's time.

It would be nice if this was that obvious. I had very similar problems with monodevelop some time ago.

Any info on when mplayer will have VDPAU support out of the box?

In Arch? Here's the problem: Mplayer built against nVidia should automatically configure VDPAU. More recent Mplayer versions built against some Intel cards (and maybe ATI?) should automatically configure VAAPI. Until VDPAU starts shipping with a generic interface to VAAPI, there's no good way to package Mplayer for the repos with hardware acceleration. There are people working on this though.

There is no such need.
I am the maintainer of the package that flamelab proposed as a solution to you (also of the smplayer-svn).
I build all the packages normally as my own user, and not as root.

nVidia recently announced that in the immediate future they will package libvdpau separately from the driver (nvidia-utils).
This means that someone can have the libvdpau library installed without the nvidia driver, ie without having an nvidia card installed.
So all you will have to do is to include one:
makedepends=('libvdpau')
entry in the PKGBUILD, and of course have the library installed at the time you make the package.

What exactly is libvdpau supposed to do without a nVidia card? What I mean to ask is is this just for packagers?

There is a reason why Arch has the ABS. If you want VDPAU, simply recompile MPlayer from source. No reason to bloat others MPlayer-installations with VDPAU and libvdpau.
Offline

Almost certainly nothing.
So yes, I assume that nVidia is doing that just for packagers.

Is there a way to get MPlayer with VDPAU support without recompiling it manually? I'm looking for a x86_64 package.
