So, what's the deal with the new Nvidia driver

There were many posts about X problems after the last upgrade of the Nvidia driver (I've experienced the same problem). No one knows what's wrong and the only solution is to downgrade to the old driver (185.18.31-1 => 185.18.14-1). When you think about it this even isn't a real solution after all. So, does anyone know what is the problem and will it be fixed in the future? Or is it maybe only connected with certain Nvidia cards?

well now you are facing the evil zen of closed software. Since the nvida drivers can't be debugged or patched, no Arch dev / user can tell you what the problem is , you can only complain at nvidia.

I think i am lucky because i have no nvidida drivers problems, so just upgrade if it fails downgrade it isnt that hard wink

Yes, I am aware of the whole "closed software" situation... I didn't say that it's hard to downgrade, ofcourse that it isn't. I was just wondering if anyone is familiar with the situation and will it be solved with the next driver version or not...

nvidia-beta didn't really have any issues, been using it for quite a while already.

Re: So, what's the deal with the new Nvidia driver

Had a couple kernel panics when using 185.18.31, upgraded to the 190.* beta and nothing since. Kinda odd, since my keyboard lights were blinking (meaning a panic), but I couldn't find any log of the error. The problem may not have been NVIDIA, too, but I still suspect it. GeForce 9600GT 512MB.

Re: So, what's the deal with the new Nvidia driver

I'm using 185.18.31 with xorg 1.6.3 with no panics on a 9500gt. Just minor flaws in subtitle display, everytime there's activity on the other screen.

edit: thanks deej, that link helped cool

The only problem that I recently had with the NVIDIA beta drivers from the NVIDIA server was that they had a problem with mobile GPU (I have a NVIDIA GeForce 7150M / nForce 630m), and it would give me a blank-black screen when booting up.

This was only for the beta driver version of 190.16: http://nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread. … ght=mobile

Versions 190.18 and 190.25 fixed this.

cool, it isn't good manners to post into another thread for help on your own thread.
