linux info pages [EDITED]

yes, i know Arch is a stripped down distro with no info pages. but is there a good site to show those lost infos? cause for example, 'man grub' gives the most shortest information and says The  full documentation for grub is maintained as a Texinfo manual...

tnx.

[EDIT]
tnx to skeeterbug here is a web info pages, for all us Arch users :

Re: linux info pages [EDITED]

yea, tnx, i googled too and found lots of info about grub. however, my question is, is there a web place to gather all the info pages of major programs so i wont need to google for each program if i want its info pages? or ever better - can i choose to install the info pages on Arch without compiling my own packages (thus including the info pages on the installation process).

thanks.

Re: linux info pages [EDITED]

I cannot understand why info documentation is stripped. Arch is not a minimalistic distribution like crux.

Is the lack of good documentation (including info) a neccessary feature of Arch?

This is the way arch is meant to be, as z4ziggy aluded to earlier. See http://www.archlinux.org/docs/en/guide/ … tml#whatis

Install Guide wrote:

In it's goal to be simple and lightweight, the relatively useless portions of a linux system have been left out, things like /usr/doc and the info pages. In my own personal experience these are rarely used, and the equivalent information can be obtained from the net if need be. Manpages all the way...

Re: linux info pages [EDITED]

IMHO, info is useful.
Libc documentation is really nice.

If Arch wants not to include info pages, it shouldn't also include man pages.
This is because each argument against info pages applies to man pages too and each argument for man pages applies to info pages as well.

I really love info pages! Should I leave Arch because of them?

Who cares what what Arch users do?
Why isn't there a package with info files  :?:

Re: linux info pages [EDITED]

well, each package has its own info files, therefor i doubt u can create a separate info package - unless you recompile every damn package u install (someone said Gentoo? :?)  or maybe hope that a new parameter in PKGBUILD will install info pages to a separate package... this ofcourse will create tons of problems since u will get a complete info package of ALL Arch packages, even if u don't have all those packages installed... thats the only solution i see anyway...

Except for the arguement from Judd that says (I will paraphrase):

I use man alot, and don't use info - that's why i didn't include it

rehcra, seriously - every post I see from you now is negative - Arch may not fit your niche.  I'm not being mean, I'm being honest - try shopping around for a new distro.

Re: linux info pages [EDITED]

i just think rehcra is still looking for his "perfect distro" (no disrespect rehcra), and lets face it - Arch aint perfect... but overall, its the best one smile imho anyway... but i can totally understand rehcra - he has a vision in his mind about what he expects from his linux distro, and he probably aint getting it here... maybe another distro will fit him better - debian is a great distro too, apt-get is next to pacman ( 8) ), and u customize it just as u would with Arch or any other linux... so maybe....?

I wouldn't find better words to express what I want.
AFAIK, there is NO distribution which would suit me better than Arch.
I won't give a try to a distro with non-bleeding-edge packages.
I hope my next post will be positive smile (there were some, weren't there?)

Re: linux info pages [EDITED]

Arch is a great distro but as with all things Linux if there's something you don't like, fix it.  It's fairly easy to build a lfs system and you learn a lot in the process (at least I did).  I came over to arch because I see a lot of the advantages of lfs but most of the distro is premade and maintained by others.

As for the info pages, I'd like to have them too but if I ever decide that it's important I'll find a way to work it.  In other words I'll add to the distro locally to meet my needs rather than expecting the distro to change for a small minority of users.  This distro isn't a democratic effort, we have a benevolent dictator in Judd and his trusted advisory panel who make these decisions.  If > 70% or so of the users asked for the info pages I'm sure they'd be willing to entertain the idea.

Anyway, I like rehcra's posts; they almost always elicit a lively response wink

8) i am the googlemeister smile

Really though, I just searched for 'gnu info pages' on google, it's the first and fourth results.  I think adding 'gnu' to the search is the term that did it since 'info pages' and 'online info pages' are no good.
