New kdebase and kdelibs in testing repo

hi
i uploaded these two packages to testing and here are the new features:

Added Arch Artwork to kde:
new default background
new default logout picture
new kdm look

Added new Defaults:
new kdm defaults
new Fonts setup
(changed ugly helvetica to Bitstream Vera and antialiasing is enabled by default)
Cups is now default printing system

Finally:
Added an Arch Menu in K-Menu for quicklinks on Arch services on Homepage

If you get problems while installing:
error: the following file conflicts were found:
kdebase: /opt/kde/share/apps/kdm/faces/.default.face.icon: exists in
filesystem

you had set an other face-icon in kdm configure gui
you can safely install the package using the -f option

The reason for cannot see all the changes after update
is that you manually changed things for your user, that is no problem
to see all changes take a new user and see what the defaults are now

please test the packages
and enjoy the new kde default look

greetings
tpowa

Re: New kdebase and kdelibs in testing repo

what you mean?
what programs i used for it?
gimp and inkscape
the pictures are from logo page and the background
is a modified version from kde-look.org

or how to create kde defaults?
look at the PKGBUILD and you will see how the second works
it's a little bit tricky

Re: New kdebase and kdelibs in testing repo

yep, i ment the kde defaults. i was looking for something like that to customize a kde package for a live-cd instead of me customizing it by hand each time. so tnx man wink

Re: New kdebase and kdelibs in testing repo

short version:
take a clean test user
make the modications you need and look what files changed in .kde
then strip the config files and copy them to
/opt/kde/share/config

Re: New kdebase and kdelibs in testing repo

i just booted and also noticed the new Arch logo on the shutdown dialog - cool stuff man! big_smile

btw, what do u think about changing the default theme in  $startdir/pkg/opt/kde/share/config/kdeglobals to Plastik by adding 'widgetStyle=Plastik' to '[General]' ?

Re: New kdebase and kdelibs in testing repo

yes thoughts were done in this direction
but we come back that we ship kde with most standards from kde.org
plastik would depend on kdeartwork and not everyone loves plastik
it's my favour too but i think plastik will become the default style in future kde releases and then it is used in arch too smile

Re: New kdebase and kdelibs in testing repo

oh i forgot when you run kde the first time you can choose plastik
in startup wizard so no problem here
and kdm can be modified to that in kdm config gui

Re: New kdebase and kdelibs in testing repo

yep, u right... although i hate that keramik theme which appears on default, mainly on the kdm-login ...
but as u said, i also think kde will move to plastik as default, so we just need to sit down and wait   8)

Re: New kdebase and kdelibs in testing repo

Hmm.. I couldn't run any admin sections of kcontrol.. I had to rm -rf /var/tmp/* before I was able too.

Re: New kdebase and kdelibs in testing repo

Are there any plans to add the KDM config files to the backup list of the kdm-owning package? (I haven't checked which one's that)
It is not very beautiful to rearrange everything just because you update KDM.

The config files for KDM are stored in /opt/kde/share/config/kdm/, as you probably know.
Specifically, the important files IMO should be kdmrc and backgroundrc (maybe others too).

Anyhow, this should be done carefully, because I don't know if KDM is backwards compatible in terms of config files. This might be just a convenience feature, which could be ignored if it breaks something.

After rereading pacman's man page (How backups work), I came to the conclusion that, if the users alters *rc files(current) in the kdm config directory and the new *rc files(new) differ from the initial *rc files(original), we're in the last case where the new files are installed and the old ones are backup-ed. So, breaking KDM is less likely to happen, isn't it?

Re: New kdebase and kdelibs in testing repo

thanks for mentioning that
kdmrc is already on backup list
i added backgroundrc Xservers and Xaccess as well
so no clashes should appear anymore
the files should be backward compatible
i included also the default files
called kdmrc.config.default and Xserver.config.default

I also get a file-conflict with "apmd". I'll report back when I test it again to get the exact file ...

Re: New kdebase and kdelibs in testing repo

I have a problem with kdebase 3.3.1-2t1 and kdelibs  3.3.1-2t1.  After I install these, I get this:

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=7820

When I revert to 3.3.1-1 versions, everything is fine.  The problem is on a new install from an arch 0.7 beta 2 base.  I have an older computer setup the same way without the problem(and with the 3.3.1-2t1 versions).

Re: New kdebase and kdelibs in testing repo

hm you are first with those problems
strange thing
can you check
if in your /opt/kde directory
do the following files exist:
file:/opt/kde/lib/kde3/kio_http.la
file:/opt/kde/lib/kde3/kio_http.so

if not these files should be in kdelibs not in the base package
try redownloading kdelibs from an other mirror
for me it works and for some others it works too

that's the reaon why i put this files to testing to get feedback that all works well and it can be merged to extra and in kdelibs i changed only 2 files which do not affect the kio's at all and in base too
if you get problems with base package you can try deleting /opt/kde/share/config/konquerorrc, perhaps it helps

Re: New kdebase and kdelibs in testing repo

Is /opt/kde/share/config/kdm/Xresources added to the backup list of the new kdebase/libs?

I personally don't know if it should be backup-ed, but it is in the same folder with the other KDM config files.

tpowa?

Re: New kdebase and kdelibs in testing repo

I don't know what it's good for either. I had a look through it and it seems it holds some XDM config... I think.

If you add it and nothing is changed between releases, the backup file will be replaced with the new version every time, according to the pacman policy for handling updated "backup" files.

Re: New kdebase and kdelibs in testing repo

as far as i know it boosts performance, but i might be wrong. google gives tons of links, here is what i think is sufficient :
http://www.crast.us/james/articles/prelink.php

from gentoo : With prelink, Kmail loads over 10 times faster than Gentoo Linux without prelink or Mandrake 9.1 without prelink
