´File´ saying FLAC is 16 bit, ripper says it's 24 bit

I have this 24 bit FLAC rip that I just obtained. The ripper said it was 24 bit - file thinks it's only 16 bit though.

This is how it looks:

$ file *
1 The View from the Afternoon.flac: FLAC audio bitstream data, 16 bit, stereo, 96 kHz, 21063637 samples
10 Perhaps Vampires Is a Bit Strong But....flac: FLAC audio bitstream data, 16 bit, stereo, 96 kHz, 25602028 samples
11 When the Sun Goes Down.flac: FLAC audio bitstream data, 16 bit, stereo, 96 kHz, 18903359 samples
12 From the Ritz to the Rubble.flac: FLAC audio bitstream data, 16 bit, stereo, 96 kHz, 18381686 samples
13 A Certain Romance.flac: FLAC audio bitstream data, 16 bit, stereo, 96 kHz, 31533281 samples
2 I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor.flac: FLAC audio bitstream data, 16 bit, stereo, 96 kHz, 17020712 samples
3 Fake Tales of San Francisco.flac: FLAC audio bitstream data, 16 bit, stereo, 96 kHz, 16951310 samples
4 Dancing Shoes.flac: FLAC audio bitstream data, 16 bit, stereo, 96 kHz, 13521991 samples
5 You Probably Couldn't See for the Lights but You Were Staring Straight at Me.flac: FLAC audio bitstream data, 16 bit, stereo, 96 kHz, 12469264 samples
6 Still Take You Home.flac: FLAC audio bitstream data, 16 bit, stereo, 96 kHz, 16020751 samples
7 Riot Van.flac: FLAC audio bitstream data, 16 bit, stereo, 96 kHz, 12636021 samples
8 Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured.flac: FLAC audio bitstream data, 16 bit, stereo, 96 kHz, 13686126 samples
9 Mardy Bum.flac: FLAC audio bitstream data, 16 bit, stereo, 96 kHz, 16757345 samples

As you can see it says the FLACs are 96 kHz (which is to be expected), but file says all audio files are actually 16 instead of 24 bit. Is there a way to double-check this? The torrent file explicitly states (FLAC - 24 - Lossless) or something like that, anyway, it clearly indicates it should be a 24 bit rip. Since MPD has recently gained support for 24 bit FLAC, I have no problems playing back (given it is 24 bit...), but metaflac is unable to add ReplayGain info to the files:

metaflac --add-replay-gain *flac
1 The View from the Afternoon.flac: ERROR: sample rate of 96000 Hz is not supported

Now I trust file to do its job - this would be the first time, if those files are 24 bit, that it wouldn't do it. Anyone else around with 24 bit FLACs that they could run file on? I'd much appreciate it.

Ok... It looks like the silent treatment all over again tongue.

Anyway - in the meantime I had some other people check their 24 bit FLACs and it seems file is (as always) right.
