Headset too loud and other applications no longer adjust the volume

So I buried out my Speed-Link Medusa 5.1 USB headset and tried it out with Linux. Worked reasonably well, I plugged it in, set the headset as primary sound output with asoundconf as written in the wiki and rebooted.

Now I have two problems:

a) I had to lower the volume to about 5 percent or they would blow my brains out.

b) Sonata, Mplayer and similar software can no longer adjust my volume. Sonata simply shows the muted Icon eventhough it's not muted and Mplayer always shows full volume and I can't do anything.

Hope you can help me.

Re: Headset too loud and other applications no longer adjust the volume

mine is also pretty loud with linux, either i have to lower the master volume in alsamixer to a level where my sound system is not loud enough or i have to stay between 0.5 to 2 with the medusa nx (it is the new model). both are connected to the same plug in my xonar d2 soundcard.
anyway it is a great headset for gaming and even music is not bad with it (and remember...i am a hifi-freak wink )

Sure have, that is where I have to put it at 5 percent.
