I am having problem with KDE and my HDA Intel STAC92xx Analog onboard soundcard on a new computer. This soundcard worked just fine under Ubuntu with Gnome and it functions flawlessly with VLC and with firefox/flash. It seems it is just KDE that is having problems with it.
I had a look at this thread here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=598208
I get the same error message when I try to play sound in K software except the soundcard will play the test sound in the System Settings dialog and my output for the codec line is different:
pete@psilocybin:~$ cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#2 | grep Codec
Codec: IDT 92HD73E1X5
I tried setting default above everything else in the multimedia settings as the thread and the wiki (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KDE … und_in_KDE) suggested but it hasn't worked.
Now I'm stumped. Help greatly appreciated

That looks like a much better way of trying to do what I was trying to do than trying to do what I was trying to do...

If you use the Gstreamer backend for phonon you must install the Gstreamer plugins. otherwise apps that use phonon can only paly "ogg" files, i think.
try:
pacman -S gstreamer0.10-plugins
this will install the hole group of gstreamer plugins.
