Now that pacman is capable of splitting, is there a chance this might happen? I always find it frustrating having to install the whole beast, when i only use one part of it.

Well, as long as there's a group that I can install once and be done with... Is it even possible? Aren't the parts inter-related?

They are all part of the same executable (I think) but possibly if you compile it yourself you can omit certain features.

Right now it would be a mess to split OOo into writer, calc ... Look at the spec file Fodora uses. Long like a book. So I doubt it can be easily done that soon. As a first step we are looking to build a split out OOo-sdk pkg.
I'm also unsure if it's worth now the effort to do a monster split. There are upstream changes going on especially in the Novell ooo-build project to integrate splitted builds into the Makefiles that would make it a lot easier.
Things are in progress but will takes some time. You are always invited to provide patches or improve PKGBUILDs.
