rebooting the machine from the live CD 2009.08 ftp, it serves me the grub commandline.
grub >
I am assuming that is the intended behaviour. But then what? I cant find what to do next. I figured i should tell him to boot from the CD but how? if i have to set the boot , like
root (hdx,x)
then what should i use to aim it at the CD?
Then for loading a kernel, what is the correct path? Something along the lines of
find /vmlinuz
doesnt return any hits.

It was booted from CD. Many other live CD distros boot just fine.
The md5 is correct and i burned 2 CD's. They behave identical. I am getting head nor tail of the grub commands.
btw trying to run the iso as a virtual machine in virtualbox yields a crash. As in this topic http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=77493

Where did you put grub? (mbr?)
Do you have a seperate /boot partition ?
What is the content of /boot/grub ? (ok, for this last question you need a live cd to answer!)
It's kinda difficult to offer any advice when you don't tell us your partitions or where you installed grub ... ;-(

Perhaps you are expecting a Live CD such as puppy linux?
The download of arch Live CD is an install CD for the OS.
Or am I misinterpreting your post?
Prediction...This year will be a very odd year!

Try the isolinux image. Alsa if you have a sata optical drive, then try switching the mode on the sata controller to ide/legacy instead of ahci. (Some bioses also have a linux compability flag for ahci, which may help)

What the partitions on my HD are and whether or not I use grub to boot from HD does not concern this problem.
It is about the arch CD only: if I boot from the CD, grub cmd line is loaded. When i do boot from the iso via virtualbox, i do get the grub menu.

No. I mean the isolinux image.
You can find it on the "Download" page, and on your favourite mirror.
