I am trying to stall XFCE using pacman
I get the following message:
":: udev conflicts with initscripts. remove initscripts? [y/n]"
selecting no doesn't initiate download/installation so I selected Yes and Arch wouldn't start up
So after a reinstall I am now trying to get XFCE installed again, I installed Dbus as the bug report #14536 suggested.
I get the same message when trying to install Xorg from pacman.

You have first update your system
pacman -Syu
then initscripts will be updated
else you only update initiscripts package then that problem will be solved.
But better first upgrade.

Welcome to the forum, action_owl!
Because of a small changing:
http://www.archlinux.org/news/454/
pacman -Syyu should work.

@sant527 ::
thanks, I updated with -Syu immediately after install
@djszapi ::
thanks for the warm welcome,
-Syyu did the trick though aftewards all of the package servers were commented out of my mirrorlist and I had to uncomment them to update/downlad packages
not sure why but good to go now, and I am currently downloading the XFCE4 and Xorg packages
I have a couple of questions also ->
1) should I use -Syyu when updating from now on? and what are the differences between the two?
2) after the update my wireless card was renamed from ath0 to wlan0 which makes me believe that it may be using a different driver, how might I get my wireless card back to ath0 and the mad-wifi drivers?
much thanks

1) It's a forced solution to syncronize, generally pacman -Syu enough for you, really.
2) Which driver does t use now ? Just modprobe madwifi not after removind the undesired one. Why does this ath0 -> wlan0 change bother you ?

It is currently using the ath5k diver I need it to use ath_pci (madwifi) again
I have tried:
modprobe -r ath5k
modprobe ath_pci
but then I end up with no wireless cards
