Infrared Laptop

I was looking at the Lirc homepage and remembered once controlling the mouse with a remote control in windows.

As I am still kind of new to linux - the question is, how do I do that in Arch.
I've read about irda for linux and lirc and installed lirc and irda-utils with pacman. But now I do not know what to do. I've tried some of the things from the lirc homepage - but it does not seem to work.

Could somebody help me out? Maybe just a hint to where to start.

I have a Acer Travelmate 290 notebook

I want to connect my TM244 with Siemens45SL through IRDA. How to do it right in Arch? Maybe someone who know this should write even short description on wiki.archlinux.org.
