I recently came across a problem. Probably about 5 months ago I started using arch. While getting everything setup the way I like it, I managed to make it so that on startup it seems that the desktop is refreshing every ~3 seconds or so, for about 5-10 times. After its done refreshing(?) everything loads normally(conky, that xfce-tips thing that I havent disabled yet )
After that happened I got busy, started using windows etc...So I don't really remember what I did to cause the problem.
I think that it happened after I added my second hdd to /etc/fstab. I'm not sure if this is when it happened, and I dont really know if that could even cause the problem(I kind of recall reading something on where it can hang/refresh or something while trying to mount it).
could this cause the problem? Or does anyone have an idea of what might be causing this?
heres my /etc/fstab just incase it might help someone diagnose the problem(I really remember thinking that it happened after i added /dev/sdb1 to it, but im not sure).
/dev/sda1 /media/disk ntfs umask=0222 0 0
/dev/sdb1 /media/disk_sdb ntfs umask=0222 0 0
none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
#/dev/cdrom /media/cd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
#/dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
#/dev/fd0 /media/fl auto user,noauto 0 0
UUID=09f44a5e-7a2b-4230-9fb6-f4b7a3903622 / ext3 defaults 0 1
UUID=98b0b3b6-1a79-4add-a5fc-caeeb5c3b48f swap swap defaults 0 0
UUID=ac239889-571d-46d8-b9ff-8dcb3794abf5 /home ext3 defaults 0 1
UUID=ba5d1048-a0a9-4d7e-bbd8-18b09e55e9b3 /var ext3 defaults 0 1
also, after all of the refreshing, I can access files on /dev/sdb1 and play my music from there etc.
Any help is appreciated.

If you have an intel graphics, enable the Kernel mode setting (KMS) . It will help you.

mjheagle8, Yes, I have a nvida geforce 9600gt. Do you mean that the same thing is happening to you, or that you fixed it?
cwjiof, Nope, nVidia.
I use xfce by the way.
Also, I commented out the line in /etc/fstab I thought might've been causing the problem then rebooted, and got the same issue. So your guess sounds right to me mjheagle8. Any idea what is causing it?
I can't remember anything I might've done back then.

I was also getting a flash right before I got fully logged into Openbox with a 9600GT. It was nowhere near as pronounced as what you're describing; It was just a short flash or two. It started around three or four weeks ago and stopped sometime within the last week. It may have something to do with the xorg-server upgrade.

i had a similar problem running xfce but only the panel would flash a few times after booting, found a solution on the forums by deleting everything in ~/.cache/sessions then rebooting

It Worked! Just deleted everything in ~/.cache/sessions, rebooted, and presto
Thanks guzz46, and everyone else.
