Re: SPSS installation fails...

I suspect that you are going to have to contact SPSS for help with this.

Re: SPSS installation fails...

Looks like maybe you are missing  `bc`  try pacman -S bc and then it might run..

It might be worth a try anyway.  I got help from SAS customer support when I installed SAS on Arch, even though it's not officially supported.

Wait...who uses SPSS on linux anyway?

Re: SPSS installation fails...

I would totally do it. We just got a copy of Matlab that I'm administering, and I was sorely tempted to steal an install on the license. Stats software would be handy. I think right about now, I'll go look for OSS equivalents...

I've got similar problem when using openjdk, when using sun-jre it installed fine for me. Hovewer I've got problem with license file - SPSS is complaining about it after every reboot wink

Re: SPSS installation fails...

Another thing is ... do you really need to install it as root? Do you know exactly what will be changed in your system when you do that?

If I was you I would create another user, softmgr for example, then maybe create a new directory under / owned by softmgr (give permission to everyone else to read and execute things there) and install all software there and add the path to the apps manually (maybe with a file in /etc/profile.d).

I use tested to do this with matlab and mathematica and it still works fine and I can have some peace of mind that nothing was changed in the system files.

Re: SPSS installation fails...

Yes, you have to

 pacman -S bc

But be aware...SPSS will be horribly slow sad

A simple frequency table takes ages.

Re: SPSS installation fails...

I know it's horrible, but I used an ubuntu VM for SPSS (when I only had to deal with it for 4 months or so).

Re: SPSS installation fails...

I've got SPSS installed on this laptop and on my desktop... It works OK, but I have noticed a few problems with performance.

It uses an old version of the jvm, and compiz will not work with it.  It's pig slow and I mean pig slow.  Simple KM analysis takes ages to do and the output takes a long time to draw.

As mentioned, you need to install BC to install SPSS.

Also beware you may have issues with respect to licensing, for some reason I have to re-authenticate my license every now and again, it makes no sense.  Matlab integrates much better as does Mathematica.

Unfortunately I need SPSS, there is no alternative available to me.

Re: SPSS installation fails...

On that licensing issue, maybe it is attached to the kernel version ... much like mathematica, that's a big pain in the neck hmm

Re: SPSS installation fails...

Yeah it is a pain, to be honest, even though I originally installed a legit version, I now just use a keygen, as sometimes on the laptop it asks me to enter keys every day even when nothing has changed. It's a right bugger.  Mathematica I haven't had any problems with even when updating the kernel, although I would imagine it does depend on the version you are using.

ROOKIE, you could try PSPP! The opensource alternative for SPSS...

Re: SPSS installation fails...

I don't use SPSS wink I was just saying that maybe SPSS requests a new license when the kernel is updated, much like Mathematica.

Yeah at the moment PSPP has a very limited subroutines, I've found it to be almost unusable for my requirements.  R is better, it's more complete.

Re: SPSS installation fails...

For me mathematica only complains if I move the install files to another place or if the kernel changes, apart from that it is ok but still it is a pain in the neck.
