Battery no longer detected by acpi

Hey everyone,

Got a Dell Latitude D410 here which has run great with Arch for some time, now. Some time ago I noticed that my battery status was showing 0% all the time. I looked at /proc/acpi and found that it thinks the battery is not present. Is battery-related information being moved somewhere other than /proc (perhaps /sys, now)?

FYI, I have laptop_mode running.

Pertinent information:

# lsmod|grep -i -e acpi -e batt
bq27x00_battery 4696 0
ds2760_battery 5540 0
w1_ds2760 3480 1 ds2760_battery
acpi_cpufreq 8624 0
freq_table 3716 1 acpi_cpufreq

battery 10984 0
processor 35800 2 acpi_cpufreq

Re: Battery no longer detected by acpi

Hello Xyon!

Was there a big update or can it work simply after a given time ?

Re: Battery no longer detected by acpi

Hi djszapi,

It doesn't seem to work after any given amount of time. I have done a few big updates over the past 4 - 6 months, but cannot remember it being triggered by any of those updates. One of the big updates was 2.6.30, so perhaps that has something to do with it.

This is quite frustrating as I lost power while using my laptop yesterday because I didn't know its percentage. Has anyone seen this behavior? Is battery status reported in a location other than /proc/acpi/ ?

"Some time ago I noticed that my battery status was showing 0% all the time. " -> How did you get it, from an applet on the panel or from command line searching the desired file?

hmm... for me its still in /proc/acpi/ in my thinkpad x61s

$ cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state
present: yes
capacity state: ok
charging state: charged
present rate: 0 mW
remaining capacity: 63510 mWh
present voltage: 16620 mV

Could you be missing some necessary modules for your Dell Latitude D410? Maybe need a replacement battery?

Same issue here on my inspiron 6400 (Dell). My laptop is a few years old, as well, so the battery isn't exactly holding 100% charge anymore.

To my memory, on my laptop, when I tell the BIOS to use the fast booting mode which skips various checks, the battery ends up not being detected. By chance have you poked at such BIOS settings?

Re: Battery no longer detected by acpi

Try booting up with acpi_osi="Linux" appended to your kernel parameters.

Re: Battery no longer detected by acpi

I had exactly that same laptop. I solved the problem by buying a new battery, since in my case not even the hardware would detect the battery and fail to charge or show any progress. This was not a problem with linux as I was dual-booting Vista/Arch.

Re: Battery no longer detected by acpi

It appears that Bios doesn't recognize that there's a battery even in my laptop. I'm thinking that masterkoppa may be correct in saying I need to buy a new battery. Thanks for the help.

Thanks a lot for the replies, guys... turns out the battery is bad, not even detected in the BIOS... this laptop has nickle-dimed me to death..
