Xorg randomly freezes

I recently installed Arch Linux on this computer, which hasn't had Linux installed on it before, but Xorg randomly freezes after a hour or so for me, and won't let me switch out into a console, forcing me to use Magic SysRq. Oddly enough, the mouse still works and the cursor moves. The freezes tend to happen if I open a menu, click something on a window, move a slider, etc.

Using Google, I've found that other people had similar problems, using the specific driver that I use, but these posts were from months ago, and apparently is supposed to be fixed by now.

I use the Intel driver and Fluxbox. I tried the EXA, XXA, and UXA accelmethods, but none of them fixed the freezes.

Re: Xorg randomly freezes

Welcome to the forum, Mugendai!

Is there any related information in xorglog, errorlog, syslog ? Which kernel/driver/xorg version do you use ?

"Using Google, I've found that other people had similar problems, using the specific driver that I use, but these posts were from months ago, and apparently is supposed to be fixed by now." -> Do you know this exactly or just a guessing ?

Did you try to login to this computer from remote and kill X ?

Re: Xorg randomly freezes

The xorglog doesn't seem to show anything new occuring when it freezes, syslog only has data on the system booting and shuting down, errorlog has nothing related.

I'll post the entire xorglog anyway, though I previously deleted it before running Xorg again:

I use Xorg version 1.6.3, as shown in the log, Intel driver version 2.7.99.902-1, and kernel version 2.6.30-ARCH.

"Do you know this exactly or just a guessing ?"
A lot of people were talking about how a version of the Intel driver was released to stop the freezing, so I assume Arch Linux would have this version by now.

I have yet to install SSH to remote-login, so I haven't tried killing it, except with Magic SysRq.

The last time Xorg froze, I had just used the command "mmaker -vf Fluxbox" while Fluxbox was running, which made it freeze soon afterwards, so I now think it might be Menu Maker that somehow makes Fluxbox unstable. I was installing a lot of programs for my new installation, and ran it almost every time after I started X to add them to Fluxbox's menu.

Re: Xorg randomly freezes

Is there the same problem with other WM too ? Could you try with other driver too, vesa, open source if it exists, etc.

Re: Xorg randomly freezes

hi
I've got exactly the same problem
my system freezes after a while sometimes it recovers or sometimes not

mine is an asus eee with an intel graphic card
I don't know if is a xorg problem but seems to be
I've checked the logs and nothing found.

In ubuntu works so it's not a hardware issue. could be the intel drivers or something

I'll try with vesa drivers and see what happens

Re: Xorg randomly freezes

hi!

apparently we have a similar problem - except sysrq doesn´t work for me. i use the intel driver too...

Re: Xorg randomly freezes

hi
looking arround I find that it's a common problem with xorg and intel drivers
the solution seems to be downgrading xorg and intel packages

unfortunaly doesn't seem to be an easy thing to do:

It's disabled on Arch Linux by default. You have to edit /etc/sysctl.conf and change:

kernel.sysrq = 0
to
kernel.sysrq = 1

Currently using the vesa driver, though fonts look odd in that and page scrolling doesn't render well. I haven't had much chance to see whether it freezes or not, since I've been partitioning my 1.5-terabyte hard drive, which takes about two days to complete. I've been using GParted to do this, and Xorg hasn't froze yet. (I know, it's rather risky partitioning on a potentially unstable environment.)

i had it enabled and it didn´t work when the system freezed.
the vesa driver is not really an option for me. i work a lot on my laptop and with vesa the fonts get very blurry. i think we have to wait for the next intel dri on AUR...

Re: Xorg randomly freezes

Installing the latest xf86-video-intel driver from AUR did it for me!

yaourt -S xf86-video-intel-newest
