I know you can change it manually because I figured it out before, but now I can't seem to find the article online that helped me do it in the first place. I don't use GDM, I just want to install a GDM theme from gnome-look instead of a blank black box with some buttons in it. can anyone help me?

/usr/share/pixmaps/backgrounds/gnome/background-default.jpg
Is that what you wanted? See this wiki article for more.

No I've already done that. I want to change the window that appears infront of that background image. right now when i return to my computer I am greeted with my background image and a black box with a few buttons and a text box for my password, I just want to install a gdm theme for that box.
thank you for your post, sorry I wasn't more clear
