How to figure out what is eating all my resources?

I am out of ideas.

My desktop machine is eating all resources right after boot, as shown by plasma applet and _extremely_ sluggish behaviour and constant blinking of hd access led.. But, htop doesn't show any process dominating and shows cpu usage at ~10%. Same goes for iotop, no process dominating and no constant access according to it.

I updated my machine yesterday and everything went fine. I am using kdemod.

So, where to start?

P.S And possibly unrelated, before update i got Grub error 18 at boot which went away with booting to arch live cd followed by normal boot. Same thing happened after update as well.

Thanks.

Sounds your update may have fixed a bug that had nothing to do with resource hogging, rather just running slowly?

Unless you get that grub error again, I suggest reformatting the mbr of your main drive with grub-install.

I went and bought new hd as I needed one anyway as I have started fearing for hd failure in near future.

I am going to make completely fresh install and see if things improve.
