If I want to boot with linux kernel 2.2 on an i686+ can I still use archlinux, or is kernel 2.2 to old for use with archlinux? Would it be as easy as just drop in the 2.2 in grub as an alternative boot next to 2.6?
If not I'd have to use an older Debian, is there any other distribution you would recommend in this scenario? The reason why I am asking is that I need to use a kernel patch / functionality that unfortunately is only available on 2.2.

Nope. 2.6.18 is the minimum (http://www.archlinux.org/news/447/) although to use udev you will need 2.6.24.5 (http://www.archlinux.org/news/457/)

Thanks for the info! In the meantime I discovered there is also a 2.4 kernel patch, but no 2.6.
I've decided to go for the last debian supporting 2.4 kernel - it took some time finding iso's for debian 3.1 - so if someone is ever in a similar situation: http://www2.nl.freebsd.org/debian-cdima … 86/iso-cd/

I just have to know - what is this functionality you need, that depends on antique kernels?

hi tomk, it's a chording keyboard hack: http://www.cs.vassar.edu/~priestdo/chordhack/ Greg Priest-Dorman moved on to a kernel/os agnostic hardware solution called spiffchorder http://chorder.cs.vassar.edu/spiffchorder/ one hand can reach 45wpm, two hands (mirrored chordlayout) reach 55wpm.
I use dvorak (with u and i positions switched) but am looking for something that is more wearable compatible. Morse entry looks ok (gnome dependent morseall or iphone iditdahtext), but might be a bit on the slow side (even though some can reach 50wpm).
