Can´t login as root

A friend set up Arch Linux but didn´t add a root password. (I needed help because I had to have the Chinese set up correctly. ) I added a user with a password but now I can´t llogin as root or as a user. ( From ....localhost login:)

try to pass 'init=/bin/bash' to your kernel line from your boot manager (i know u can with grub, dunno about lilo). this should let u in without login into root. u can also recue back from a live-cd.

I used Knoppix ito edit my etc/password and etc/shadow files. Deleted the part with an * so there would be no password for root but when I reboot and login I still get  the incorrect password message.

Well my girl is smarter than me. I entered the root password for the user and the user password for root....

At lleast I can boot up linux without knowing the root password now...
