alsa and hp dv4t

ok so when i was installing arch i knew making the external speakers work was going to be a battle.
when i play the font_center.wav test file... i get sound but it hangs on the first millisecond or so, and just endlessly repeats the f sound. now in ubuntu it did the same thing with the start up sounds and any sound for that matter. but the fix was quite simple.

i went into /etc/modprobe.d/alsaconfig or something like that... and added this line

options snd-hda-intel enable msi=1

then i rebooted and everything was fine and dandy.

well when i add that linein arch to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf and reboot,
alsa breaks

it then spits out the error message when i try to play a file or run alsamixer:

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device or directory

now i tried reinstalling my kernel and checking permissions like the wiki said...
and still nothing.
help?
