[SOLVED] User Password Problem

Hey guys,

I've recently thrown together a computer from spare parts and put Arch onto it.  I'm having a problem with sudo however.  I can't seem to enter the right password to be able to do anything with sudo.  Neither my user password or my root password will work and I've tried using gpasswd to change my user password, but it still won't work after that.  I just keep getting, "Sorry, try again" whenever I enter what I believe is my password.

I must add, I had forgotten what the initial password for the user was so I tried changing it with gpasswd.  Is it possible that I somehow still need to type in the initial user password?  Am I trying to change the password in a bad way?

Thanks in advance!

Re: [SOLVED] User Password Problem

Have you edited the sudoers file and added the entry you want e.g. <youruser> ALL=(ALL) ALL ?

If you cam login with the password you set, it's correct.

Re: [SOLVED] User Password Problem

Yes, though if I hadn't I don't think I'd still be having this problem.  It's as if I can't login rather than being denied permissions.  Unless the file plays a role in the sudo login process.  I'll double-check it.

Yeah, I had successfully edited the sudoers file to include "user  ALL=(ALL) ALL".

Re: [SOLVED] User Password Problem

Try typing the password at the prompt or in a text editor to see if the characters are displayed correctly.

Re: [SOLVED] User Password Problem

The characters display correctly.

EDIT:

So, I'm pretty sure this doesn't make a difference but I'll go ahead and inform you.  I'm not using GDM or anything to login to my user account.  When I boot up I login to root then I use "su - <user>" and startx from there (it's a new setup, I haven't gotten around to installing GDM or anything yet).  Then I try to use sudo.  So I'm not actually logging into the user account with its password.
