Do you mean you can't type the pipe character? If so which character is displayed and which keyboard / laptop make?

The symbol you're referring to seems to be the vertical bar. To type it, you typically hold the Shift key down and press the key right above the return key, which features a backslash (\) and what appears to be a broken vertical bar (marked in this image with a big red dot).
If you're doing the above correctly and still not seeing a vertical bar, what happens instead?

The pipe character is the key to the left of 'Z' and immediately above Ctrl. Type Shift-\.
The bad block -- probably best to run fsck with the disk unmounted -- from a live CD.
