Desktop not very responsive (gnome, fglrx)

Hi there,

my probelm is, that if i start my Linux system (2.6.30-ARCH 64bit) when the computer was completely turned off, my Desktop is very laggy and not responsive.
E.g. in Firefox scrolling through websites and scrolling through PDFs in evince. If i scroll with the mousewheel there is a delay until the document scrolls.
This laggs occur under Metacity and Compiz. Under Compiz it feels even a bit more laggy than under Metacity.

So. Now if i logout to GDM, go to a console and kill GDM (killall gdm-binary) and start it again (gdm) i get a locked black screen (why???).

If i press the reset button and login to my destop again it is responsive as usual. No lags, no shit ...
From a complete shutdown and reboot, this doesnt work.
Weird!

Does anyone know how to fix that?

Try to go to your gnome desktop by startx command wink

Re: Desktop not very responsive (gnome, fglrx)

Also, surely due to a bug in AMD/ATi Catalyst, if you kill GDM this way, you may need to unload the fglrx driver before you start the X server again, or else it wil freeze.

Re: Desktop not very responsive (gnome, fglrx)

Thank you guys, but both of your advice don't work sad
Do i have to configure something first before i can use "startx -e gnome-session"?

If I unload the fglrx module i still get locked in a black screen when I restart gdm.

You must delate gdm from deamons line from rc.conf (only for a test).
If you got I your inittab run level 5 change it to 3.
Just wirte # before line with run level 5.
And delate it form line with runlevel 3 smile.

Re: Desktop not very responsive (gnome, fglrx)

you may try to diff /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old and /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see if something interesting shows up.

Re: Desktop not very responsive (gnome, fglrx)

I get the same AIGLX warnings as you:

(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x23
...
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x72
(II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized /usr/lib/dri/fglrx_dri.so

Anyone got any idea whether that's at all significant?

I'm new to ATi hardware & quite disappointed with 2d performance using fglrx (the only option right now for my card), xfce lags quite severely when resizing windows or changing desktop...

Btw jack, using the 'nopat' kernel parameter makes things noticeably better (but still severely lacking) here.

Re: Desktop not very responsive (gnome, fglrx)

Did you already try the very cool "killall gdm-binary" and reset method? wink
After that everything works perfectly smooth.
I did buy my ATI Graphics card because they develop open-source driver, now i think i had better bought a nvidia

Re: Desktop not very responsive (gnome, fglrx)

No GDM here to reset. Scrolling web pages is fine for me tho, it's resizing windows, changing desktop, watching videos, logging out, etc that lags here.

It's the warnings in our xorg logs that made me post more than anything, I haven't a clue what it means...
