KDE 4.3 hangs system at start up

Hello. I'm testing Archlinux to see if it will one day replace my Debian installation.

Things were more or less fine during its short sporadic use, until I upgraded the system and KDE 4.3.0-6 was installed. During start up (startx), it hanged.
Today I tried another "pacman -Syu", and saw KDE 4.3.1 was available. It still hangs in the same way and place. The progress bar says that Akonadi is starting up.

Deleting the KDE configuration files at $HOME does nothing. The blinking caps lock and scroll lock make me think its a kernel panic related problem.

Information from the log files does not seem helpful (I'm posting several because I'm not sure where to look):

Xorg.0.log:
(EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)

kernel.log:
Sep  3 10:09:47 typhoon kernel: X:3511 freeing invalid memtype f8102000-f8112000     (repeated about 30 times)
Sep  3 10:09:48 typhoon kernel: mtrr: MTRR 2 not used

Sep  3 10:10:12 typhoon kernel: [drm] Loading R200 Microcode
Sep  3 10:10:12 typhoon kernel: [drm] writeback test succeeded in 1 usecs

x.org runs fine with other window managers. Does anyone have any idea where I could look next for an explanation?
Thank you.

Re: KDE 4.3 hangs system at start up

I have the same pb since upgrade KDE from 4.2 to 4.3.

I use Arch with OpenBox at home at KDE at work. Everything was fine for years. I started having pbs with xorg about one year ago, with X hanging sporadically at start, or aften a random number of switches between consoles using CTR-ALT-Fn. I rarely starts X since I hibernate rather than halt computers, so this circumvents the pb.

Now after last upgrade (pacman -Suy) KDE 4.3 hangs, so that for the time being I use OpenBox also at home. Actually KDE starts and the mouse pointer is activated, but I get no taskbar and no response from mouse clicks, it hangs with a blank screen (white at work, black at home...).

Here is the error output from startx (KDE having being killed with CTRL-C). Errors from xorg are also present with other window managers, but they don't hang the system.

At home, KDE does display startup progress at the usual default theme, it's only after the music indicating completion that I get a black screen. From there I can launch applications through ALT-F2, thus it is tempting to launch the taskbar and the program that handles desktop from a konsole at see what happens. I tried to launch plasma-desktop:

~> plasma-desktop
Invalid D-BUS interface name 'org.kde.plasma-desktop.PlasmaApp' found while parsing introspection

same pb observed there:
http://groups.google.com/group/linux.de … c3580a87e9
reported as a bur there:
http://osdir.com/ml/kde-bugs-dist/2009-08/msg15089.html

Another strange behavior, don't know if this is related to an X pb or whatever, but when I click on the ^ button in the top bar of a windows, I obtain a small window in the top left corner of the screen instead of a maximized window.

Re: KDE 4.3 hangs system at start up

Ah, your X startup does seem to throw a lot of errors. Have you tried X's auto-configuration? It worked fine with me.

My problem seems to be different. It really hangs the system. Ctrl-c doesn't work, Ctrl-Alt-backspace doesn't work, there is no console system working and so on. The machine seems to do nothing other than blinking Caps and Scroll lock and spinning the fans. KDE never finishes loading. No error reported!

I'm thinking I might have to reinstall my system from scratch to see if it works then. Too bad, I was liking Arch. sad This is the most drastic measure to try to fix it.

Re: KDE 4.3 hangs system at start up

I had the same problem with KDE 4.3 but it is gone with KDE 4.3.1 thank God.

Re: KDE 4.3 hangs system at start up

I have the same problem on arch linux 64 bits.  Has anyone resolved this?  Do I have to go back to an older Xorg?  I already have the latest kde (4.3.3-1)  as far as I can tell.  I've heard some say it's an issue with some nvidia drivers,  but those too are the latest from arch anyway (190.42-10).
