Catalyst driver problem: Low resolution

Hey
I just installed the catalyst driver for my Mobility Radeon HD 3650, I'd been using the radeonhd driver before. With the radeonhd driver, i could use 1680x1050 which is the maximal resolution for my monitor but with catalyst, the highest I can use is 1280x800. My login screen has good resolution, but once im logged in it drops back to 1280x800. Anyone know what I could try? I searched the forums but couldn't really find anything.
I'm running arch i868 on a Thinkpad T500.

Thanks
siell

Re: Catalyst driver problem: Low resolution

Welcome to the forum, siell!

1. " I'm running arch i868 on a Thinkpad T500. " <- maybe it's a typo.

2. What happens if you try to run the WM/DM from console, is there any related error output, did you try to anaylize the errorlog/syslog/Xlog ?

Re: Catalyst driver problem: Low resolution

same problem. At many forums I read abot this problem, but never saw any instructions how to solve it. I find that it was problem width max. wide screen resolutions in old catalyst driver. But it was old, and now i think must be any solutions, patch... my fglrx could not find best resolution (in my case it 1680x1050, now i use 1440x~990). with open drivers it works fine. tried to modificate xorg.conf sections "Monitor" and "Display" but, i see catalyst ignore this sections=( any ideas? if i do new mode with xrandr will it work fine? Soon I write my logs and say what we got from my experiment with xrandr...

Re: Catalyst driver problem: Low resolution

I use the catalyst drivers on one of my desktops, Catalyst cannot interface w/ xrandr, it should honor settings in Xorg.conf though.  Looking at your "startx" output, I wonder if maybe the Catalyst driver just can't handle the proper resolution?  I'm not sure.

Edit: Catalyst supports some subset of the xrandr protocol.

Have you tried configuring things with ati-config or the catalyst control center?

Re: Catalyst driver problem: Low resolution

Thank you for answer! I'm really sad that i can't do anythink with this resolution... all worked fine with: kubuntu karmic koala, catalyst 9.10, xorg<7. now i also use xorg<7, because fglrx 9.10 can't start with X>7.
so this isn't connected with dislpay or video card... it's in software. Yes, and 1680x1050 work with open drivers. Problem is with fglrx. So... yes in my case Catalyst can't handle best resolution, can't find it.
amdcccle say that the maximum resolution is 1440x900, if i try

ati-config --resolution=0,1680x1050

no effect, it's only write in display subsection of xorg.conf mode 1680x1050.
FGLRX... what you do wrong?..
Please, archers, help!!

In my opinion, it's strange, that output DFP2 have monitor section and CRT2 which is connected doesn't. This explain that all changes of resolution modes in xorg.conf did not give any effect. fglrx use DFP2 instead of CRT2. how it fix i don't know... and we have an error with edid... next time i try to compare this log with x log when i use open driver...

Re: Catalyst driver problem: Low resolution

Edit: You should probably try my second post, first.

1st of all, don't panic and be patient, second of all, could you post your Xorg.conf file?  Maybe you can fix things by adding a modeline to the monitor section in Xorg.conf.

Or maybe one of these ati-config options could help?

Pair mode options:
Following options are used for query add and remove pair modes.
These options will be effective immediately. Other options on
the same command line will be ignored.
  --list-pairmode
list all the current existing pair modes the driver can use.
  --add-pairmode=width0xheight0+width1xheight1
Add one pair mode to the list. width0 and height0 are the
size of primary display and width1 and height1 for the
        secondary display.
  --remove-pairmode=index
Remove one pair mode from the list. User can get index by
        list-pairmode.

or

Component video customized mode options:
Following options are used for query and set customized mode for
component video. These options will be effective immediately.
Other options on the same command line will be ignored.
  --query-cvmode
query customized modes for component video.
  --add-cvmode=WIDTH,HEIGHT,FLAGS,BASEWIDTH,BASEDHEIGHT,REFRESH.
add a customized mode for component video.
  --validate-cvmode=WIDTH,HEIGHT,FLAGS,BASEWIDTH,BASEHEIGHT,REFRESH.
validate a customized mode for component video.
  --delete-cvmode=INDEX
delete one customized mode for component video.

Re: Catalyst driver problem: Low resolution

Actually, I take it back, catalyst supports at least some subset of the xrandr extension.  Try these instructions:

adding modelines w/ gtf and xrandr

Re: Catalyst driver problem: Low resolution

Thank you again, I'll try to be patient;)
XRANDR
How I wrote above, I try to change my resolution using xrandr. I did all steps like in this link. Black Screen after changing resolution. One interesting moment. Author said

Please note that the maximum virtual framebuffer size cannot be increased but can be decreased.

So, I want to do 1680x1050 and...

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1400 x 1050, maximum 1600 x 1600

How You see, maximum width is 1600... If I change set resolution not by '-s' but by '--output' it doesn't change and give error

xrandr: screen cannot be larger than 1600x1600 (desired size 1680x1050)

My output name is CRT2 not VGA, maybe this is the problem? But my display connected via VGA...
MODELINES XORG.CONF
I did it many times like an insane (Einstein sad

doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

)
'Mode' and 'Modeline' doesn't change anythink.

Re: Catalyst driver problem: Low resolution

In may Xorg.conf file, on another, intel based computer, I specified a "virtual enery" at the end of my screen section.  It looks like:

BeginSection Screen
... stuff ...

   Virtual 2048 2048
EndSection

Now you could try something similar, I don't know if it will work becuase I think Xorg defaults to the largest possible "Vritual" desktop anyway, but it's worth a shot.

Also, try specifing a modeline in your monitor section.  (There should be ample documentation on how to do this provided by a google search).

If things still don't work after you try specfying a modeline, maybe there's something wrong with the way things are configured in Xorg.conf; in which case you should post the file, and see if someone here can figure out what's going on.

I've had no luck figuring out whether or not Catalyst does support your resolution, there doesn't seem to be any documentation from ATI on what modes their driver supports, while I think it's probable that it should support 1680x1050, the possibility exists that it just doesn't, in which case you'll have to choose between the lower resolution, and using the open drivers.

Re: Catalyst driver problem: Low resolution

Old topic, but I had the same issues some minutes ago: This can easily be fixed with adding a virtual size to your screen section:

Section "Screen"
  Identifier "Screen"
  Device "device"
  Monitor "monitor"
  SubSection "Display"
    Modes "1680x1050"
    Virtual 2048 2048
  EndSection
EndSection
