Mplayer and xine don't work

I cannot say much. I've tested it with Mplayer and xine but both don't work. I want to use Mplayer so I'll speak only from mplayer.
When I start Mplayer and go to DVD - Open Disc this error appears -> "Cannot open the IFO file for DVD title1"
I don't know what I should do. I have the following packages installed on my machine mplayer 1.0pre5-5, libdvdcss 1.2.8-1, libdvdread 0.9.4-2 everything from pacman.
I couldn't say more so I hope anybody know something.

Re: Mplayer and xine don't work

i know it sounds stupid, but did you mount your DVD? and is mplayer pointing to the right DVD device. cuz there is /mnt/cd and /mnt/dvd.

you should check your settings, especially if you still use devfs.

Re: Mplayer and xine don't work

No my dvd is not mounted when try to run the dvd.
Mplayer is pointing to /dev/dvd as normal and I made the right entries for generating /dev/dvd in /etc/devfsd.conf
I only have /mnt/dvd cause I only have one Multi DVD drive which supports all. I think I should mention that it's a Laptop.
I'll post the entries from devfsd.conf which counts to the possible failure generators.

# CD-Rom Permissions for burningREGISTER
^ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0/cd PERMISSIONS root.cdrom 666
# Create /dev/dvd
LOOKUP ^dvd$ CFUNCTION GLOBAL mksymlink ${mntpnt}/cdroms/cdrom0 dvd
REGISTER ^cdroms/cdrom0$ CFUNCTION GLOBAL mksymlink ${devpath} dvd
UNREGISTER ^cdroms/cdrom0$ CFUNCTION GLOBAL unlink dvd

I suppose that it has to do with the packages from pacman. Eventually they are not compiled with the proper options to mplayer or something like that stuff. So if anyone has dvd playback running under the same packages as I, plz reply.

Re: Mplayer and xine don't work

sounds like a bad path error.

have you checked that your /dev/dvd is there/properly created?

mplayer, xine, vlac, ogle, etc all work fine for me. I don't bother making a /dev/dvd though.

Re: Mplayer and xine don't work

try linking mplayer to /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 instead of /dev/dvd

Re: Mplayer and xine don't work

I think mplayer also gives a more meaningful error message running gmplayer from the command line.  Maybe that's what you're doing, but I think that error message is the error message window that pops up and it could be a few different things.

Re: Mplayer and xine don't work

MPlayer now runs I have changed to udev BUT

I have changed to udev because I thought I could manage with this step the problem that my dvd device isn't any more in /dev
I have talked about it to many people but there is no end in sight. Fact is that I could bind my dvd into dev with mknod /dev/hdc 21 0 but why isn't it done automatic. Now I must mknod after every reboot.
If somebody know anything say it I think about a different thread over this issue.

Re: Mplayer and xine don't work

if you have /dev/hdc and do not have /dev/dvd, try using /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 or, read this: http://archlinux.org/news.php#106

Re: Mplayer and xine don't work

Come on guys. When I speak from not here it's absolutly not here and not only a link which is not here.
The device is nowhere so I have to mknod it.
Everything begin in the devfs system. I bootet my system and suddenly I discovered that this device isn't there any more (/dev/ide/...) I searched for the problem and have spoken to some people but not no one could help me. My last chance and hope I saw for me was to switch to udev but as you know this wasn't the end of the story.
I feel this is not a general problem it's much more and the end is far, far away   sad
