Updating Packages while the associated apps are running...

I have always had this fear that if I am running KDE and I do a pacman -Syu and udpate KDE while it is running, that something will break. So as a result I always edit my /etc/inittab to boot to console, restart, and run pacman -Syu from the console. Is my fear reasonable or is it silly that I worry about it?

I think you fear is moderately justified - although I have not run into issues upgrading while in a full desktop environment for a while now...  I only upgrade from console for MAJOR desktop updates these days.

Nothing to worry about.
The updated executable won't be in use until you restart the app.
Obviously there are some exceptions like the nvidia driver. You can't upgrade it until you end your X sessions. But either way, no harm can be done.

Thanks for the replies! What about the intel video driver? Does it update if I run pacman -Syu inside KDE?

Same thing.  You must restart the X server in order to use the new driver.
