Curious problem with pulseaudio and external usb soundcard

Hi,

I have been working with pulseaudio on arch for a little over one year by now. Despite some minor setbacks I was quite pleased since I use one internal soundcard on my Barebone and an external one simultaneously and I do like the functionality Pulse provides for that setting. But yesterday something strange happened - pulse cannot play filed via the external usb soundcard anymore. This in itself is not too special. But the modules of the external soundcard are loaded and I can access it via ALSA easily. Even when I open up pavucontrol it shows the USB-SC, but only as an input device. I have tried all the standard-routines (reloading modules, changing USB-connector,etc.) but nothing helps - the soundcard remains without an output-stream (at least for pulseaudio). Since the internal one does not sound too good, this problem really drives me crazy.

I use:

I would like to help but I only feel your pain!  I have the same (or almost the same problem)!

I use KDE 4.3 and when I installed Arch, I couldn't get any audio.  One of my Arch using friend suggested to change to the phonon-xine backend for KDE multimedia.  That helped a lot!  I had audio.

Here is the catch : after a while (less than an hour), the audio will always get buggy.  There are audio glitches and then it completely stops sometime bringning the audio player process down with it.

At fist I though this was still caused by KDE 4 multimedia framework, so I tried rebooting then, without even stating X, I played music on the command line with mplayer.  Once again, I worked... for a while.  Than I got the exact same problem I had while plying music within KDE.

So, KDE new multmedia framework is not the cause.  I tried building my own vanilla kernel (2.6.30.5 and 2.6.31) and I get the exact same behaviour.

Oh!  I forgot to mention : I'm doing this on a new computer.  Everything worked flawlessly for almost a year with my old computer running Gentoo Linux with kernel 2.6.29.x.

At some point, I thought this was a distro problem.  I tried installing Kubuntu and I even built a Funtoo only to find the exact same behaviour.

I even went as far a replacing the motherboard!  The first mobo I bought was based on a ATI chipset.  I always had trouble with ATI products, so when I got problems I cursed myself for yet again giving ATI products a try and bought a tried and true NVidia based motherboard.  This leads me to believe that it not an hardware issue... or if it is, it affects both ATI and Nvidia chipsets.

So far, what do we know :
- used to work on different hardware, kernel, distro
- does not work on new hardware regardless of distro
- works neither on ATI or NVidia chipsets
- works for a while after a boot than stops working
- while the problem occurs, other USB device (HID keyboard and mouse) are not affected

I tried using every single USB port on my computer and I get the problem no matter where my USB sound card is plugged.

De-pluggin the sound card and pluggin it back again does not help. :'(

I'm so desperate that I'm going to try to downgrade my kernel to   2.6.29.6.

I bought this computer to serve as an HTPC connected to my brand new Hi-Fi system.  It's driving me nuts!  Even my netbook work flawlessely with my USB Burr-Brown Hi-Fi DAC!

Perhaps try using pactl to load-module the appropriate module manually? Take note of any error messages and google them.

Using old USB dongle with my intel system.  Worked great until kernel 2.6.29 when it failed to respond with a USB mixer display.  Corrected that problem with a change to 2.0 USB port and all was well.

Then came 2.6.30-5 or some such and no more USB mixer display, no sound.

Spent many hours searching for info....one suggestion, since I use KDE was to install phonon-xine.  This made the system respond if starting from cold start but did not work in reboot.

Finally, I modified mkinitcpio to install soundcore and snd-usb-audio...then ran mkinitcpio -p kernel26.(Installed as modules...EDIT)

FWIW this solved my USB mixer problem and all snd is now repeatable with reboot.  Flash works great...use mplayer and vlc for video flash and otherwise.

Not a pulse audio user.
