Chase - automatic updater for Arch and KDE4

Hello people,

I just realized I did not introduce Chase yet to the whole Arch community.

Chase is a small KDED Daemon, very lightweight, based on aqpm that is able to monitor your system for updates, download and install them. It is integrated with Shaman and won't conflict with it. Some more details and a visual tour here: http://chakra-project.org/bbs/viewtopic.php?id=1303

I saw somebody created a pkgbuild for it (which I did not test): http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=29567

Hope you will enjoy this one!

Well, I think this is a nice idea as some kind of update notifier. But, are you sure you really want to provide automated install of new packages? Yes, you put a warning there, but nobody should ever want to enable this as this will break your system for sure sooner or later.

Yup, it's automatic _only_ if the user really wants to. In any case, he would be prompted to put the password and he is always forced to read the installation log output (the notification won't go away until you open the dialog), which carries all the various scriptlet output and stuff. Also, if the updater finds a question from libalpm, a conflict or whatever it will instantly stop and redirect the user to use Shaman or Pacman.

So yeah, already thought about this smile

Maybe you need to display a huge disclaimer before they can enable it tongue.

Already in, you don't see it from the screenshot. If you choose the evil option, it will show you a frightening messagebox telling you what you're risking.

You might want to add an option to notify of updates but do not download them. Some people are limited what they can download (download caps) so these people might want to select what to download.

Nice idea, although I don't think it's wise to automatically update a system with no warnings or acknowledgement from the user.

Just kidding.  big_smile big_smile

I will check it out.  Thank you for the useful utility.  smile

Re: Chase - automatic updater for Arch and KDE4

I have been using this for a while now and I must say it is really good.  You so need to be careful to read the log it displays before or after an installation so you know what was installed incase it breaks something on your system.  For instance the recent trouble with xorg and KDE.

The software required Windows XP or better, so I installed archlinux.

Automatic updates in Arch may cause trouble sometimes when you need to modify your config files. Will that be done automatically by this? Then it will mean more trouble. tongue Anyway, the update notifier should be useful.
