Hi, I installed amaroK 2 and it's currently using sqlite3 which seems to be very slow. I wish to change its backend to MySQL but I don't have that option in the menu, so I'm guessing it was compiled without MySQL support. Should I just compile it myself?

Well, I use sqlite without problems and I have about ~5000 songs, but if you still want mySQL, you should probably consult the relevant wiki entry here:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Amarok#MySQL
According to my 5 secs of research, mysql should be an option, so maybe it hasn't bene compiled with support, but I can't imagine why. Have you got mySQL installed?

Yes, it needs to be explicitly compiled with MySQL support and that's what I'll do. Sqlite isn't dreadful but I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I'll try to recompile it anyway.
Thanks for the help!

Amarok2 uses mysqle (mysql embedded), not sqlite, by default. 2.2 introduces support for an external mysql database.

5000 songs isn't much... I have ~700gigs of music and without using the mysql backend for Amarok1.4 any type of operation that accesses the database is incredibly slow.

Ah I didn't realise you were using amarok 1.4, assumptions got me again!
@ugkbunb: wow, that's a lot of torrenting, I tip my hat to you sir But seriously I can imagine that even with mySQL it must be sluggish at times?

I am not sure what the OP is using. He could very well be using Amarok 2.x
Really though with mysql --- searhing all 700 gigs for one song there is barely even a pause... I was quite amazed myself. I was used to in windows organzing my music myself and adding/controlling my player through the context menu. I still do that on Arch with Amarok but I am getting more and more used to the search collection feature of Amarok. Quite nice really.
